Renting in Belgium: documents and your rights
Which documents landlords in Belgium usually ask for, what to cover on your ID and payslips, and what they may not ask.
What landlords usually ask for
- Your name and contact details
- Proof of identity and that you can sign a lease (shown, not copied)
- How many people will live in the home
- Your monthly income, for example with a recent payslip or employer certificate
What to cover on your documents
On your ID
Cover your national register number (on the back of your eID). A landlord may look at your ID but may not keep a copy of it.
On your payslips
Cover your national register number and your bank account number. A landlord only needs to see your income.
What a landlord may not ask for
- Your national register number at the application stage
- Keeping a copy of your ID card
- Detailed bank statements, a criminal record extract or information about your health
